Youghal & East Cork long weekend from £169

Enjoy a long weekend break in the historical holiday resort of Youghal, Co Cork, staying in the sea front promenade Walter Raleigh Hotel. We also visit spend time in the city of Cork.

In the year 830 a Tsunami hit the south coast of Ireland, changing the flow of the Blackwater River to form the second largest natural harbour in the World, at Youghal. It was once rated as second only to the port of Bristol and it was to here that one of the town's most famous residents, Walter Raleigh brought the first potatoes from Virginia in 1585. He planted them at his home in Youghal, where he became Mayor of the town and it was from here that he made his final trip to the West Indies in 1617.

Youghal is today better known as a holiday resort but its long colourful history is still apparent with its medieval walls and the iconic Clock Gate spanning the main street. The name of Walter Raleigh lives on at the hotel on the sea front promenade that bears his illustrious name - our base for our stay here in East Cork. There are 41 en-suite bedrooms, most with sea views, an attractive restaurant with a renowned chefand a lively bar. We spend time getting to know Youghal and Cork City on all tours and add a day trip to Dungarvan & Waterford on the longer, 5-day, mid-week departures.
