Prague has for many centuries been one of Europe's
major Imperial cities. The castle, reputed to be the biggest in
the world, has been home to the King of Bohemia, Holy Roman
Emperors and more recently, after the "Velvet Revolution" the
office of the president of the new Czech Republic. Berlin also
belongs to that elite club and has likewise emerged from a
long, often traumatic past as a capital of a new reunited
Germany.
"Berlin and Bohemia" includes introductions to both cities
and their immediate hinterlands, with some free time to
explore. We travel through central Germany, stopping en route
in the province of Thuringia, home to Queen Victoria's Albert,
Martin Luther and J.S. Bach to name but three and return via
the dramatic Harz Mountains, the backdrop for Grimms' Fairy
Tales and the town of Hamelin of Pied Piper fame.
We break the journey between Prague and Berlin with a short
tour of the beautiful city of Dresden, capital and royal
residence of the Electors and Kings of Saxony, destroyed
towards the end of World War II and only recently restored as
one of the new Germany's important cultural and economic
centres.
